The best places to travel in May are the ones that will be packed in July. Southern Europe, the Mediterranean islands, Japan, and the US national parks all hit their sweet spot in May: warm enough to enjoy, quiet enough to move around, and priced below the summer peak. May is widely considered the best shoulder month of the year in the northern hemisphere. Schools are still in session for most of it, so families have not arrived yet, and the weather has already turned.
There is one thing to plan around: Memorial Day weekend in the US, at the end of the month, which is when domestic travel spikes.
Why May Beats June and July
Three simple advantages.
- The weather has arrived, the crowds have not. Europe is warm by May, but the summer wave starts in mid-June.
- Prices sit below peak. Hotels and flights in Europe and the US are noticeably cheaper than they will be six weeks later.
- Long daylight without extreme heat. Southern Europe in July can hit dangerous temperatures. In May it is pleasant.
The tradeoff: sea temperatures are still cool in much of the Mediterranean. May is for exploring, not for long beach swims, however, there are some best places to travel in July.

Europe in May: The Best Window of the Year
Italy
Rome, Florence, and Venice in May are what people imagine when they think of Italy. Warm, sunny, and not yet unbearable with crowds.
The Amalfi Coast is open and green but not overwhelmed. The Dolomites are clear of snow at lower elevations, with hiking trails opening up.
Greece
The islands wake up in May. Ferries return to fuller schedules, hotels reopen, and the landscape is still green from winter rain before the summer turns everything brown.
The sea is cool but swimmable by late May for the brave.
Portugal and Spain
Both are warm and sunny without the summer heat and the best places to travel in May . Seville and Lisbon in May are ideal for walking, which they are not in August.
Croatia
The Dalmatian coast in May is beautiful and quiet. Dubrovnik is manageable, which it is not in July.

US National Parks: Peak Season Without Peak Crowds
May is the best month for many American parks.
Utah and Arizona
Zion, Bryce, Arches, and the Grand Canyon are warm but not dangerous. Summer heat in these places is genuinely hazardous. May is the last comfortable window.
Go early in the month for the mildest conditions.
Yellowstone and the Northern Rockies
Roads reopen through May and wildlife is highly active, with bears and bison out with young. Some high-elevation roads stay closed until late in the month, so check before you drive.
California
Yosemite waterfalls peak in May with snowmelt. This is the single best month to see them.
Japan After the Blossoms
May in Japan is underrated. The cherry blossom crowds have gone, the weather is mild and dry, and the country is green.
One caveat: Golden Week, a cluster of national holidays in late April and early May, is when Japan travels domestically. Prices and crowds spike. Check the exact dates and go after them.
Warm Beaches in May
If you want a beach, not a city:
- Caribbean: still dry, still warm, and prices drop after the winter high season ends. One of the best value windows of the year.
- Mexico: hot and dry, before the summer rain arrives.
- Hawaii: consistently good, and May sits between the winter and summer crowds.
Where NOT to Go in May
| Place | Why skip it |
| Southeast Asia | Hot season peaks, and the rains begin |
| Northern India | Extreme pre-monsoon heat |
| Northern Europe far north | Still cool and unpredictable |
| US domestic on Memorial Day weekend | Busiest domestic travel weekend of late spring |

FAQ
Is May a good time to visit Europe? It is one of the best. Southern Europe is warm and sunny by May, the summer crowds have not arrived, and prices sit below the peak. The main tradeoff is that the sea is still cool for swimming in much of the Mediterranean.
Is May a cheap month to travel? It is cheaper than June through August in Europe and the US, though not as cheap as the deep off-season. You are paying a small premium over winter for much better weather and still-manageable crowds.
What is the best US national park to visit in May? Utah’s parks and Yosemite are both excellent. Zion and Arches are warm but not yet dangerously hot, and Yosemite’s waterfalls peak in May from snowmelt. Yellowstone is also good, though some high roads open late in the month.
Should I avoid Golden Week in Japan? Yes, if you can. Golden Week falls in late April and early May and is when Japan travels domestically. Prices and crowds rise sharply. Traveling after it gives you the same good weather with far fewer people.
Your Next Step
May is the month to book the places you would avoid in summer. Rome, Dubrovnik, Zion, and Santorini are all better in May than they will be in eight weeks, and cheaper.
Check two dates before booking: Golden Week if you are going to Japan, and Memorial Day weekend if you are traveling within the US. Avoid both and May is close to a perfect travel month.
